Muscle Pain

Be honest, do you think about the things you do every day? When you’re sitting in front of your computer and completing a project? When you’re playing a game of football with friends? When you’re carrying a bag of groceries to the car? No, of course not. You only start thinking about this when those movements become problematic because of muscle pain.

How many muscles do humans have?

Whether you’re blinking, walking, smiling or lifting a bag, every move you make uses at least one of the 600 muscles in your body. Most muscles are used unconsciously, such as heart muscles (cardiac muscles) and muscles that control your organs (smooth muscles). These muscles are always active; day-in, day-out. Very convenient!

What are your skeletal muscles?

When referring to muscles (with regards to exercise, massaging or pain), we generally talk about skeletal muscles. These are the muscles that, together with tendons and bones, move the skeleton. Take your biceps, triceps or hamstrings, for example. These are the muscles that allow you to hold a temporary posture or make a (sudden) movement.

How do I get rid of my muscle pain?

Generally speaking, muscle pain is not serious, but it can be inconvenient. The pain usually disappears within a few days. What if my muscle pain doesn’t go away?

There are situations in which muscle pain will not go away after a few days. Do not hesitate. Always visit a doctor if your muscle pain lasts longer than a week. It is also advisable to visit a doctor in case of fever and direct injury following a twisted ankle or a hit to the body. If the muscles cause a warm, sore, red spot, there may be an inflammation.
